Cheryl Sterbick loves her Lakewood home. It was built to house military families in the 1940s, and she's been raising hers in it for the past ten years.

"We just love it! It's a quaint little house, and has got a lot of charm," she said.

Last year Cheryl started taking bids to get the roof replaced. Her choice: Thompson Roofing.

When they finished, Cheryl loved their work so much she joined their referral program. Here's how it works. If a Cheryl refers a paying customer, She gets a percentage of the cost of her job back as cash.

"You're supposed to get 2 percent of whatever job was," she said.

After referring her friend Yuri Button to Thompson last year, Cheryl thought she'd get a $361 check.

"I would have never heard of them," Yuri said, "if it hadn't been for Cheryl and her very, very high recommendation for them."

Cheryl got the deal in writing, and only got excuses when she tried to follow up. When I called Thompson Roofing, they told us they are going out of business and can't pay.

"When someone is telling you that and it's one of their selling points, they follow through and actually do it," Cheryl said.

The Attorney General's Office tells us because Cheryl got the deal in writing, she still could get some money if the company files bankruptcy.

Money is great, but privacy is better. The next time you hand your phone number over to a business, register it with the Do-Not-Call Registry. Because if the company's hurting, there's no telling where your information may wind up.
