SHORELINE, Wash. -- Thousands of U.S. Census workers will be hitting the streets starting May 1, and they'll have a few identifying characteristics -- like a Department of Commerce badge and a Census messenger bag.

What they will not be wearing, for the most part, are U.S. Census T-shirts.

But Sue Mills and Laurie Sorenson were still concerned when they saw a bunch on sale for $1.99 at the Goodwill store in Shoreline.

"Laurie saw the shirts hanging on the rack, and we took a look and said, 'Well, these shirts really should not be here,'" said Mills.

But there they were, red Census 2010 polo shirts, the label on the front, the multi-colored hand logo on back. The two found eight shirts, and ended up buying all of them for fear that "anyone could buy one and do with them what they wanted," said Sorenson.

Or, more specifically, that anyone wearing those shirts could look official enough to gain your trust, maybe more.

"They could ask your name, your social security number, your phone number," Mills said.

"Potentially, your personal information getting into the wrong hands," added Sorenson.

A U.S. Census Bureau spokeswoman said there is no official "uniform" for census takers -- rather, they are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing that will help them as they walk long distances. However, some may choose to wear Census paraphernalia.

The best way to identify an official Census worker, they said, is to look for the government-issued I.D. badge, which will have the local Census office phone number, and a messenger bag.

Any residents suspicious of the person at their door are encouraged to call the local office to verify the Census taker's identity. A Census taker also will never ask to enter a home, nor ask any questions beyond what is on the official survey, said the bureau.

Sue and Laurie said they're worried not everyone will know that and will take the shirts at face value.

"I don't know where they came from, where else could they be? They could be in thrift stores all over the country," said Mills.

KING 5 stopped by the Shoreline Goodwill and found 20 more of the printed Census shirts, as well as some Census 2010 travel bags.

But when notified, employees immediately took the items off the shelves, while a manager said she'll send an e-mail to all the other Goodwills in the area with a picture of the shirts.

As for where the shirts came from, a Census spokesperson said they were likely promotional items shared with a local partner agency, probably left over from a marketing event, and donated with good intentions.

More tips from the U.S. Census Bureau:

  • The Census Bureau does not send e-mails about participating in the 2010 census.
  • Workers will NEVER ask for your bank account number, credit card number or any other financial information
  • Workers will NEVER ask for a donation or for money
  • Workers will NEVER send requests on behalf of a political party
  • Workers will NEVER request PIN codes, passwords, logins or any other information that would provide access to your private accounts
  • If in doubt, call 425-908-3000 to confirm that the person at your door is a census worker.

The constitution mandates the government take a census every ten years - BUT it does not mandate people have to participate in it.. For the government claiming people have to participate in it while wiping away our constitutional rights when it suits them is hypocritical. I moved last fall and will not file a change of address or change my drivers license or vehicle registrations until after this foolishness is over - the government has NO RIGHT to be asking the questions on the census form - the only information they can ask is how many people live there (and I will not even answer that)

A Census taker also will never ask to enter a home, nor ask any questions beyond what is on the official survey, said the bureau. Should be: "A Census taker also will never ask to enter a home, nor ask any questions beyond what is on the official survey," said the bureau.

"Or, more specifically, that anyone wearing those shirts could look official enough to gain your trust, maybe more." (Incomplete sentence)............................ misuse of AND. "The two found eight shirts, and ended up buying all of them " there is no change in the subject of the sentence, so no comma before the 'and' here. This happens several times in the article.

OWEN LEI, you need to go back to ENGLISH 101. Thousand of U.S. Census workers will be hitting the streets starting May 1, and they'll have a few identifying characteristics -- a Department of Commerce badge and a Census messenger bag. Let's edit the mistakes. Thousand(s) of U.S. Census workers will be hitting the streets starting May 1(st), and they'll have a few identifying characteristics(:) a Department of Commerce badge and a census messenger bag. Now on to read the rest of the article.

To those posting on here who say they are Census workers; What do you do when you go to someone's door, and they refuse to give you any info other than the number of people in the home?

LOL 5 minutes out of you life..even by there own estimates it is much longer and even longer if you have to go search for all the info they want. Sure its not the goverment "out to get you" but it is the goverment intuding into peoples private lives, and if you no longer trust the goverment ( I dont ) why would you give them the info. When they come to my door because I will not fill out the ACS they will get to listen to me rant and then the door will slam in their faces.

The ACS is a statistical trend form. It shows demographic shifts and population movements. It's not just "government out to get you", or some secret society within the census trying to blacklist you, or thieves trying to figure out when you leave so they can rip off your plasma tv. The census does a service for the country, and it's been around for centuries. I'm not a census taker and I don't work for them, but I've used their microfiche for genealogy purposes. Just fill out the form, and it's no longer an issue. No one will come to your door. It takes five minutes out of your life and doesn't even need a stamp.

I'm a census taker. Please remember that we are your neighbors. We didn't design the questions, and we are trained to take only information on the form--and I don't know why the story doesn't mention that we do NOT ask for social security numbers and you should never give that out -- real census workers will not ask for it. I've had many treat me with kindness and patience, but also a few who were rude. We are doing our jobs as best we can, and we do take privacy concerns seriously. Please remember we are your neighbors.

What is the ACS.. American Community Survey, it is sent out to a percentage of the population..it is from the US census and is "required by law" same as the regular census..it has questions about what type of building do you live in (house, apt, mobil ect.) then some questions about heating ect. how much you paid for it, how much worth today, ifyou pay assosiation dues how much, how much your mortage payment s and does it include property tax then they get to people that live there..citizenship..languages spoken what kind of health insurance you have, your physical well being, maritial status, if former Active duty..then on to what you do for a living... how you get there, what time you leave home, how long it takes to get there, what kind of company is it, then onto your money how much you make from all sources (work, interest, social security ect.) basicly a bunch of info the goverment HAS NO BUSSINESS ASKING ME!

Good grief, are you suggesting that fellow Americans would stoop so low as to pretend to be something they aren't in order to con other Americans out of personal information for personal gain? Isn't America above that? What do you think we are, a bunch of bankers?

Okay here we go.......again! I too agree with dkjamerican who said on May 1, 2010 "Thanks for the warning, with some many scams out there..." I too agree, thank you for the warning story. Yet, I have to say regarding what rsarris stated below on May 1, 2010 I don't know what the ACS census is you refer to but I do know that I just spent a good portion of my life in training!! Yes, I have been hired and trained as an Enumerator for this Census Job. And we are not trained to ask how much you made, nor how much you made per hour or how much you made in the last 12 months! see page 2 below..........

trained. I would like to get this info clear! We as Census Takers will NOT be asking for "How much you make per hour? / How much you made in the last 12 months. / And how you made it." as : rsarris stated previously. Not according to the official forms that I finished filling in according to my training! Thank you for your time and attention not for not spreading more rumors or false information! A fellow human being, May TRUTH find you too :)

My husband and I were in Astoria, Oregon on the 23rd-26th of April for the Crab and Seafood festival. They have several crafts and other booths there. One happened to be a 2010 Census Bureau booth that my husband stopped at and there he received a printed 2010 Census Bureau T-shirt. They were handing them out pretty freely to attendees of the fair. Should we be cautious? Maybe. Should we blow this all out of proportion? No. I quite honestly didn't give it a moments thought when my husband showed me his shirt. I'm sure there are hundreds of them out there.

"probably left over from a marketing event" ... I wonder how many viewers thought the report should have explored the angle about why the census is throwing away tax dollars? (The article does say something about "probably" from a marketing partnership, this would still be paid for by tax dollars, and still seems indicative of federal spending habits.)

The feds spent millions on "freebies" to give away to immigrant enclaves all over the country, to allay their fears over the census...and now we find out they ended up in thrift stores? How ridiculous and what a waste of our money...not to mention the entire scam factor. I hope that KING 5 and other news agencies will have the guts to call the feds on this and find out why they wasted our money this way and point out to them the potential dangers...unbelievable how idiotic our leadership is !!!

"•Workers will NEVER ask for your bank account number, credit card number or any other financial information" That may be true with the little 10 question census but if you're one of the unlucky ones selected for the ACS census then guess what they want to know how much you make per hour how much you made in the last 12 months and how you made it..sure it isnt account numbers ect. but it is financial information so saying they will NEVER ask for ANY financial info is a lie. what do you expect its the feds and they lie all the time
