SEATTLE - If you are looking for a tree care business, you may want to check out the ratings provided by "Consumers' Checkbook." It's a non-profit magazine (with an accompanying Web site, "Checkbook.org") that rates a variety of services.
For one week only (10/12-10/19), this normally subscription-based publication is allowing KING 5 viewers free access to ratings of tree service providers. (When you access the ratings, you'll just need to provide your e-mail address. You will not receive any spam, etc., because of this "registration.")
According to Consumers' Checkbook president Robert Krughoff, it pays to compare.
"We found prices ranging, in one case, from about $800 to more than $2,000 for exactly that same tree, and as we find in so many services, there's really not a relationship between quality and price so some of those firms that give low prices actually rate very high in the quality of their work."
