TACOMA, Wash. - Eighty-two-year old Dorothy Youngblood couldn't believe it when her furnace malfunctioned, pouring heat into her already hot Tacoma home.
"It was over 90 degrees," she said. "I was sort of getting afraid."
She called her daughter, Gina, who then called a company called A Quality Heating & Cooling to fix the furnace.
The owner hurried right over.
"He was going into great detail about 'I've worked with some unscrupulous HVAC types. I know their tricks,' and how they overcharge you so I was believing all this. He seemed like a nice enough guy," said Gina.
Gina paid $579 for the fix, but a few days later the furnace kicked back on again, and Gina tried to call A Quality Heating & Cooling.
"This is the first time I get a message saying this number has been temporarily disconnected. I'm thinking what?" she said.
After getting no response for days from the company, Gina had to call us quick, before her mother did something drastic.
"I would have shaken him so hard I would have shaken his head off," said Dorothy.
We learned that A Quality Heating & Cooling is not a registered contractor with the state. It has more than $13,000 in unpaid construction violations and has an unsatisfactory record with the Better Business Bureau.
Finally, owner Ernie Teutscher is not an electrician, which is required for the work he did on Dorothy's home.
We tried to reach Ernie at his house. He failed to return all of our phone calls so we tracked him down and put the heat on him.
He admitted that he's not an electrician, but he had nothing more to say.
A different company did go to Dorothy's home and make the proper repairs for $100.
Her daughter can't understand why someone would do this to her mother.
"It's quite a disappointment that he'd do something like that for my mother, fixed income and not a lot of money, he didn't fix the problem and it's a dangerous problem for her health," said Gina.
Here's what you need to know: Some HVAC repairs have to be done by an electrician, and all of A Quality Heating & Cooling's issues were right there on the Labor & Industries Web site.
We told Gina to go after the company's bond.
