TACOMA, Wash. – For 28 years the Tacoma Dome has been home to monster trucks, pop stars, and the occasional RV show … but a pro basketball team?

Members of the Tacoma City Council say it could happen.  They're planning to spend $100,000 on a feasibility study to see what it would cost to renovate the aging dome, and determine whether there would be enough financial and public support to bring a team to town.

Mayor Marilyn Strickland points to the new international car museum being built next door. She thinks the pair would make an attractive combination.

"You look to the new museum, you look at the Tacoma Dome and you wonder what can be done to improve it. As we talk about improving our current asset we think about a long-term, strategic way to make it a regional asset and make it work hard for the citizens,” she said.

Some in the city, like Alex Neymin, are skeptical.

"We're too small," he said. "If they couldn't make it work in Seattle, why would it work here?"

Supporters point to a population of 1.5 million people within 10 miles of downtown Tacoma, and the huge support shown to the Sonics when they played one season at the Dome when KeyArena was being renovated in the mid-1990s.

The general feeling among those at city hall is that if an NBA team comes back to Washington, an NHL franchise would follow in its footsteps.  So Tacoma, or whomever is willing to pay for it, could get a two-fer.

Of course, it all comes down to who would pay for a renovation of the dome which would likely run in the hundreds of millions of dollars. Seattle voters were unwilling to fund a new Sonics arena. Some in Tacoma feel the same.

"I'm not sure if they would go for spending a lot of money," said Tacoma mom Denise Cline. "There are so many other things that need our attention right now."

Personally I don't think the venue is an issue. Its the team. I don't care how nice the Stadium is. Nobody is really into watching there team get hammered. Tacoma should look into a professional Soccer and Hockey team in my opinon.

I always said renovate the T-Dome. Was there not a private group willing to put up like 150 million to build (new) or renovate Key arena? Where does this group stand now? I know in this economy the public would vote it down as it should, but also in this economy a major sports group or two would be a boost for local buisnesses meaning more jobs. Joint Base Lewis Mchord is now the biggest base on the west coast. This would make alot of people stationed there with their family's happy to see a visiting team from their home town. Tacoma does not need Seattles permission to bring in Pro Teams. This would be a smart move for the Tacoma City Council to look into. COME ON TACOMA, TIME TO MAKE A BIGGER MARK ON THE MAP!!!!!

Tacoma would be a great place for some hockey! The NBA still makes me mad. Both would do well in T-Town! Have to get some more cool bars going that people can walk to. Sorry Seattle but Tacoma is WAY more rock and roll than you. Always has been really but now it's too obvious. Go to a rock show in Tacoma sometime and see what I mean.

The travel from Seattle-Bellevue was an issue before when the Sonics played in the T-Dome; it'll be an issue again. Certainly the thought of spending the same if not more time on the road going to and from the game as you might at the game itself isn't going to be a big seller for luring potential season ticket holders and luxury box buyers living west and east of Lk. Washington, especially when bottom-dweller teams like Cleveland or Sacratomato come to town. Plus we've got a lot more folks around today. More than likely a Tacoma-based team will need to depend upon south-sound money. Maybe they'd have a shot if the franchise develops quickly into a contender, but who's kidding who? This is Puget Sound...we don't get those kinds of ownership groups who are passionate (and smart) about building a winner around these parts. Besides, it's not just the T-Dome itself; what about the surrounding amenities within easy walking distance? Not everyone gets amped about overpriced stadium food.

As a WA native and now resident of So Florida I have seen the other side of this with how the locals support their teams. Here in the So FL region the only true "Miami" pro team is the Heat which play right in the downtown area. The NHL franchise (FL Panthers) are actually located in Ft Lauderdale, and play 20 miles away, and no one has any issue traveling that distance north or south to see their team in the Bank Atlantic Ctr. The Dolphins and Marlins both play in a stadium on the far outskirts of downtown, at least 15 miles or more away, and it is not a convenience for the residents either. The stadium is however located off a main freeway, and is easily accessible for parking and such, just as the Tacoma Dome is, and actually a team (or 2) playing in the Dome should gain some interest, not people complaining about it. Who the cares about a drive or the "aroma' when you're talking about getting an NBA or NHL team in the NW!! Get Seattle back on the sports map! Make this happen!!

Welcome to the contest tonight between the Hilltop Gunslingers and the LA Clippers. Hockey season is just around the corner so be sure and get your season tickets to see the Tacoma Tideflats.

Aw c'mon guys, the entire region doesn't live in Seattle. Believe it or not, there are actually about 1M of us down south that would love to see a major league sports team play closer to home. You northies have an NFL and an MLB team, why not show some love to your south sound Washingtonians?

@jpl0205, what privately funded venue would you be speaking of? It will be the same old story in no time, "we need a new facility or we're moving" and we want the taxpaers to foot the bill. "NO THANKS"

I'm speculating that it would be a temporary facility, while a more permanent, privately funding venue is built closer to Seattle. Much like when Key Arena was being renovated. Time will tell.

Why do we need a study? Pay me 20K, I will do the study and have the answer in thirty minutes.Everyone know that the current intrastructure could not handle the traffic. It already takes two hours to get back from SEATAC on a Friday, lets add 15K more cars onto the road during rush hour.

Lets leave David Stern's dog and pony show right where it is now and not invite them back to this area until HE and his cronies are gone gone gone.
