About 50 students and staff at Edison Elementary School in Tacoma are fine after being overcome by fumes Friday.
The school was evacuated just before 10 a.m. after kids and teachers started feeling sick. Firefighters set up a triage area in the playground and treated 47 staff and students for headaches, nausea and dizziness. Eighteen patients were transported by ambulance and 27 patients were taken by school bus to local hospitals for treatment.
Authorities say the fumes were a combination of roofing materials and exhaust from a gas-powered leaf blower being used on the school's roof.
Haz-mat vented the building and did not find any additional threats, so they cleared it for students to re-enter.
