TACOMA, Wash. -- Pierce County Sheriff's deputies arrested a man suspected of trying to run a deputy over in Gig Harbor Friday morning.

The incident started as a routine police check of a vacant house in the 1500 block of 66th Court NW. When a deputy walked onto the property, a man driving a car tried to run the deputy down. The deputy fired at the car and is believed to have hit it, but the driver did not stop.

At few minutes later, the driver got into a black Dodge pickup in the 7000 block of 56th Avenue Court NW and led police on a 15-mile high speed chase across the Tacoma Narrows Bridge to east Tacoma.

Once in Tacoma, the suspect ditched the truck in front of a home near 55th and M streets. He ran about a block and a half and was founding hiding in a backyard. Police captured the suspect and took him into custody around 11:15 a.m.

No injuries were reported. The deputy who came close to being run over was not hurt. The suspect who was trying to escape capture was not shot, but he did appear to have some blood on his back.

Police are investigating the incident and were determining if the suspect had any help in the pursuit.
