The adopted son of the Pierce County Sheriff's Department spokesman has been charged with third-degree rape and third-degree child molestation, according to documents filed by the state prosecutors.

Zachary Thomas Troyer, 19, allegedly engaged in sexual intercourse with a woman who was at least 14 but under the age of 16. The activity occurred multiple times between March 1 and March 22, the charging documents say.

He is the son of Det. Ed Troyer, the public information office for the county sheriff's office.

The news was first reported by The News Tribune of Tacoma.

In a statement to the News Tribune, Det. Troyer said, "As foster parents we have raised seven kids through foster care, including Zach, who we got when he was 5 years old. All were taken out of abusive situations.

"Zach currently lives on his own. I would expect him to be treated the same as other 19-year-olds facing similar allegations of consensual sexual activity, and I'm confident the truth will come out."
