Did you know you can recycle your Christmas tree lights?
A program sponsored by Metro Parks Tacoma and the Girl Scouts of Western Washington aims to keep thousands of strings of lights out of the landfill.
The program was sparked by an idea from 10-year-old Jessica Lam, who approached Point Defiance Zoo staff three years ago with an idea to keep lights out of the landfill while raising money for the Zoo's conservation fund.
You can drop your unwanted holiday lights in designated bins at the Zoo's main entrance and at other locations. Remove all packaging, twist-ties and rubber bands. Place lights directly in the bin -- with no bags or other extra material.
