FIRCREST, Wash. -- The 3-year-old boy reported missing in Fircrest on Thursday afternoon was at Mary Bridge Hospital in Tacoma on Thursday evening.

The boy's younger brother was taken to the same hospital earlier in the day after police reponded to a report of abuse at a Firscrest home in the 1000 block of Panorama Drive.

The younger child, 18-month-old Makai Hampton, was in critical condition after suffering serious trauma to the head. The older child, Tyrone Hampton Jr., was in better condition but also suffering from significant trauma.

"i just hope my babies are OK; they didn't deserve this," said the children's mother, Heather Berven.

The man believed to be responsible for the trauma is Stepan Perebeynos, Berven's boyfriend, who was supposed to be taking care of them, according to authorities. He is now in custody and booked for Assault on a Child in the 1st Degree.

Police said Perebeynos called 911 on Thursday afternoon. The medics who responded found 18-month-old Makai, but not Tyrone. Perebeynos said Tyrone had been kidnapped days earlier, but authorities now say he was with other relatives, who dropped the boy off at Mary Bridge Hospital Thursday night.

PCSO said a third sibling, a 7 year old, was taken into protective custody Thursday from the child's school.

Berven said she had no idea Perebeynos was capable of abusing her children. "I would never leave my babies with someone that i didn't trust," she said.
