The Department of Defense on Thursday announced that an Army brigade combat team based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord will deploy to Afghanistan this spring.

According to the Pentagon, the scheduled late Spring 2012 rotation involves more than 4,000 soldiers from the 2nd Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division.

The 3rd Stryker Brigade, also based at JBLM, is already in Afghanistan on a mission that began last fall.

The soldiers are expected to serve a nine-month deployment. They will join about 4,700 Lewis-McChord soldiers who are currently serving in the country.
