A 17-year-old boy from Burien was shot and killed after a group he was with had an argument with another group in White Center Wednesday night.
It happened just after 10 p.m. near 15th Avenue SW and SW Roxbury Street.
Friends and family identify him as Ruben Kastillo. About 50 people gathered near the intersection to light candles, lay flowers, and sign a poster covered with Kastillo's pictures.
“Knowing that he got shot was pretty shocking to me because that’s the last person I expected,” said
King County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Sgt. Cindi West said the victim was riding in the back seat of a car that had stopped at a gas station when the argument ensued with a group at a bus stop across the street.
When the vehicle left and drove past the bus stop, one of the men at the stop opened fire. The bullet went through the taillight on the passenger side and hit the victim in the back.
The victim was driven to a nearby fire station and was transported to Harborview Medical Center where he died.
“I couldn’t believe it. It didn’t feel real to me,” said Anastasia Romero. “I have to get used to the fact that he’s not here no more.”
The intersection in White Center is known for violence and drug crime. In 2011, a 22-year old woman was shot and killed in nearly the same spot as Kastillo after an altercation late at night.
“I want justice for him because that person took somebody else’s life,” Trujillo-Lopez said.
The suspect description is vague - a 6-foot tall black man wearing a gray hoodie.
