Strong support among Seattle voters for paid sick days

SEATTLE -- It comes as little surprise that paid sick days have received overwhelming public support in Seattle. But until now, it's been difficult to say with precision just how strong that support really is.

Released Wednesday, a poll conducted in late August shows more than two-thirds of likely Seattle voters favor the Paid Sick Days ordinance that passed out of the Seattle City Council Health Committee on August 10.

The poll reports 69 percent of voters support the current ordinance, while just 22 percent oppose the measure.

The poll also asked how a candidate's support of the paid sick days ordinance would affect voter's decisions on election day, to which more than four in ten respondents said they would be more inclined to support a mayoral (48 percent more likely) or city council (44 percent more likely) candidate who was in favor of the sick leave proposal. Only 20 percent were turned off by the stance.

"In tough economic times, workers are vulnerable and cannot afford to lose income or risk being disciplined simply because they have the flu or a child needs medical care. So many go to work sick because they do not have paid sick days," said Marilyn Watkins, spokesperson for the Seattle Coalition for a Healthy Workforce. "Rebuilding the middle class, strengthening families' economic security, and giving all children the opportunity to thrive requires common-sense protections like paid sick days."

The ordinance passed by the Health Committee was modeled on the common-ground proposal crafted by Seattle workers, local small businesses, faith, labor and community groups. The proposal is set to come to the full Seattle City Council for a vote on September 12.

@kewfly: judging by the mostly neg response on this story, guess I'm not the only one. And, indeed, I'm quite happy living outside of Seattle and posting about stuff happening there. With a mayor like McGinn it's easy to do. You probably don't own a business yourself, do you?

@richard98075: We are glad you don't live here as well. Why are you even posting? Oh, right. You just aren't happy unless you are complaining about something.

It should read, strong support from Seattle voters to receive free money for doing nothing. No wonder this whole country is going broke. Too many give a ways. People should wake up and be responsible for themselves.

Well, we have sick leave, and annual leave, but if you get sick, and you use all of your sick leave, then oh well, you just get leave without pay.

Maybe Seattle should pass an ordinance requiring companies to pay workers for not working. Wait a second...! Thats what they're doing! Going to work all the time really can be inconvenient sometimes. Darn it.

I have employees who get sick every time they accumulate a sick day. And then they really get sick and must take the time off! How much "vacation" time must be donated before enough is enough. Seattle CIty Counsel and the Health Commitee please take a few sick days on me!

Well how about meeting halfway? Sick leave comes out of PTO. I feel this is a fair compromise.

Now we have government telling business how to run their business. Wow, only in Seattle. Our union workers don't even get paid sick days. Thats one of the big reasons why I have made sure to stay on the east side of that lake and even thats to close sometimes.

So glad I don't live in Seattle. A virtual mini-socialist state. "In tough economic times, workers are vulnerable and cannot afford to lose income..." so businesses are supposed to pick up the tab and hire temps? The same excuse of tough economic times goes for a business... and it's the small businesses that can not afford to hire temps just willy-nilly. I'm all for worker protection, but at the cost of the business? This ordinance makes it even less attractive for a small business to set up shop in Seattle. Seattle is the 6th most expensive city in the US for parking, and the mayor McSchwinn doesn't makes doing business any easier.

More of a burden on small businesses. Not a good time.
