Space Needle prepped for New Year's fireworks

Preparations were underway Friday afternoon for the annual New Year's at the Needle celebration and fireworks display.

Ten thousand people are expected to gather around Seattle Center tonight. Celebrations start at 8:15 p.m. with a concert at the Armory Building.

A 7-minute fireworks show launched from the top of the Space Needle will start at midnight.

Tune in to KING 5 at 11:35 p.m. for the Wimmer Solutions Presents New Year's at the Needle broadcast, hosted by Evening Magazine's Meeghan Black, Jim Dever and Michael King.

For people planning to travel to Seattle Center via the Monorail, note that the last train departs for Seattle Center at 11:15PM. Service resumes after "All Clear" from Fire Marshal (12:15 a.m.'ish), and will run until 1 a.m.

Sound Transit said it is adding two southbound departures tonight, departing Westlake at 1:00 a.m. and 1:15 a.m.
