SEATTLE -- Seattle Parks and Recreation is accepting donations for its Learn to Swim Scholarship fund.

The scholarship fund helps low income families afford swimming lessons. Kathy Whitman is the city's Aquatics Manager, and she says the need is strong. The current scholarship fund dried up last week.

"We've had families in the last week saying that they would love to sign up their children, and there's not enough dollars in the system to be able to do that," said Whitman.

Seattle Parks and Recreation reports that there were 122 drowning deaths between 2008 and 2012 in King County; nine of those cases involved children under the age of 17, according to the city.

"In a city surrounded by water swimming lessons are an essential life skill," said Whitman.
