Seattle considering more off-leash dog parks in South Lake Union

SEATTLE -- Booming growth in Seattle's South Lake Union neighborhood doesn't just mean more people, it means more dogs -- hundreds more. The City of Seattle is now looking at new options to let those pets run free.

Hundreds of new housing units and commercial buildings are dog-friendly, including businesses like Amazon. For example, Amazon lets employees bring their dogs to work.

Seattle's Park and Recreation estimates nearly 1,000 more dogs either live or work in South Lake Union. Now this community is asking the city to provide some off-leash dog areas.

To fill the void, the city is searching for a temporary spot while it looks for a permanent location. Three areas are up for consideration:

Cascade Park. There's part of this field would be fenced off, but there's some competing interests with a kick-ball league.

South Lake Union Park. This location would not be fenced in. Dogs could only run off-leash during certain times of the day.

Denny Park. There's a grassy patch that would be fenced in which some park users aren't to keen on. Some worry the dogs will tear up the park's landscape, especially at Denny Park.

"This is Seattle's first park. You know you hate to kind of change. I think it'd be fine to have a small section for dogs, wouldn't bother me," said Bill Poole, who walks through Denny Park.

"I really believe dogs bring people together. As corny as that sounds, people strike up conversations with each other. I think that could happen here, and I think it would bring a different life to the park," said Kate Macellari, dog walker.

Park commissioners will make their recommendation Thursday to the superintendent, who is expected to make a final decision of a temporary off-leash area.

South Lake Union isn't the only Seattle neighborhood looking for off-leash options. Queen Anne, Magnolia and Beacon Hill neighborhoods have off-leash projects underway slated to open next year.

Personally, I'm all for the massive increase in the dog population. There will be just that much more to kill and eat when the s@$t hits the fan.

CrichSeatle, people who frequent parks (dog or otherwise) in general are a minority when viewed against the whole population. I'm all for these dog parks. Give them a place to go and they won't be at the other parks. Same logic for bike paths and trails. They keep more bikes off the roads and out of vehicle traffic. As for the taxes going to benefit different "minorities", that's how society works. I'm sure you get some tax-subsidized advantages that the majority don't neccesarily use. For example, I pay taxes and never use South Lake Union park, should I be complaining too? Should you pay a user fee every time you go to a park?

Worst idea ever. The dog fad has gotten WAY out of hand and Seattle taxpayers don't need to pay more money for park for people who POLLUTE our city. Talk about making your neighborhood a less desireable place to live! No more dogs, please!

Your article points out that there are 1000 dogs, but compared to the number of people living in the area, that 1000 is nothing. There are hundred of thousands of human beings, and those people need outside space too. They are quietly going about their lives, enjoying the urban lifestyle and the urban parks. While you may have a noisy group constantly demanding more off-leash dog space, they are still a minority. Keep in mind that they are a minority. If they want more off-leash dog parks in the urban corridor, they should contribute more money as user fees to purchase some urban property specifically for that purpose. Why can't they set up a web site and ask for donations from dog owners and users? Taxpayers are already footing the bill for bike paths and existing dog parks. Don't give S. Lake Union park to the dogs just because Amazon likes dogs! It is for people, and the taxpayers paid for it, not Amazon!

Somebody que the bitter old whiny dog haters. Yes, it would just be the worst thing in the world to have a dog park, wouldn't it? Oh, the humanity! Dogs that get out and get socialized with other dogs and people are usually not the ones who bark all day and night, so if you enjoy dogs barking incessantly in your neighborhood then you definitely don't want a dog park anywhere near you.

Relax dude, Pet ownership aint a fad. Its been going on for hundreds of years. I will agree that the pocket dog BS from Hollywood was a terrible fad. Try that with a Chessie though.

You know, this area is going heavily contribute to dog genocide when the dog fad runs out. Case in point, a few years ago, the Taco Bell dog was a popular breed, then the economy hit and many got rid of those dogs. Many of those dogs were herded up and put to sleep. Hope everyone enjoys the blood on their hands!
