The call for a federal civil rights investigation of the Zimmerman case is being heard in Seattle.

There is concern that what happened in Florida could happen here.

"In Seattle, Washington, we have to pay attention to this because we know that things like this can often happen here.  We're often suspects first and citizens second," said Seattle NAACP President  James Bible

Seattle's Mayor Mike McGinn has a similar view.

"That's a potent mix, with the Stand Your Ground Laws, a permissive gun culture and racial profiling. We have a lot of work to do to change our culture to prevent tragedies like this."

Washington is one of 31 states with laws or legal precedents similar to Florida.  Like Florida, in Washington, people have a rights to defend themselves with lethal force if they believe their lives are in danger.

Each state's laws differ.

Washington's version is based on a State Supreme Court ruling and not an act of the legislature.
