KING 5 cameras were rolling when Assistant Police Chief Mike Sanford, seen in the video above wearing a white shirt, decided to rush into a downtown crowd on May Day to make an arrest without protective gear.

According to our news partner the Seattle Times, an internal Seattle police department memo criticizes Sanford's actions that day, because officers in riot gear had to pull him from a hostile crowd of protesters, diverting police resources from policing a march that had already grown violent.

Sanford was later reassigned to work on implementing the department's 20/20 reform plan. A spokesperson for the department said the reassignment had nothing to do with Sanford's actions on May Day.
