SEATTLE – Police moved into Westlake Park Monday morning and began removing the tents of the Occupy Seattle protesters who defied orders not to camp in the park. Eight people were arrested.

Around 6:30 a.m., officers could be seen moving through the park. Police moved some tents, but some protesters took the initiative to move on their own. About 140 tents were removed from the park.

"I don't support the SPD but I understand that they're doing what they are told to do and so I try to be as respectful as I can, but some people are a little more upset," said one protester.

Westbound Pine Street between Fifth and Fourth avenues was closed around 7 a.m. Metro Transit reported that routes 7, 10, 11, 12, 14, 43 and 49 were being re-routed for about two hours. Riders were advised to use the stop at Pine Street east of Seventh Avenue.

Mayor Mike McGinn has invited the demonstrators to move to City Hall Plaza and out of the retail core, but only a handful have responded.

"Mayor Mike McGinn is not going to put his sticker on our protest," said a protester. "We're not going to let that happen."

Some demonstrators say they'll remain in Westlake Park to carry on their protest against what they say is undue power of corporations over the U.S. government and economy. Police say that's fine, but that camping is not allowed and the park closes at 10 p.m. every night.

Two weeks ago, 25 people were arrested when police forced protesters to remove their tents.

Why are two people sitting facing each other on the back of a beast with a head on each end, and fighting which way is forward? I guess they got to oil the machine beast.

@rnl52 If you don't want to hear the answer to the question you posed, don't ask it. As for the other two morons who commented, there is a bit of projection going on there.

This is not peripheral stuff. Increased deployment of the surveillance state. Increased military spending with emphasis on increasing drone technology(60 drone bases now worldwide) Not bad for a Nobel Peace Prize winner - the most cowardly form of warfare ever devised. Failure to reign in abuses by Wall Street through increased regulation of their activities, but what can you expect when you are the largest recipient of Wall Street campaign contributions, not to mention the appointment of all the Bush and Clinton economic tyrants - Geithner, Bernanke, Paulson, Rubin, Summers etc. Failure to make good on promise to close Guantanamo Bay. Continued use of torture. Bailouts to the tune of 16 trillion to Wall Street. If you want a complete rundown on the hypocrisy of Obama and broken promises, check out a film called "Lifting the Veil" at metanoia-films.org

Head line should at least read Protestors or Law Breakers. They the right to protest, but sure is getting tiresome. How about some real news for a change instead of the whiner news.

As I see it, Americans, both dems ans repubs, are tired of the status quo. Historically, democracies last about 100 years before they colapse. We've done well. It is now time for a revolution to change the corporate greed and eletism that has developed due to free markets and capatalism. These aren't bad things until people create monopolies due to greed. Our government elected have reaped the profits. Now it's time for them to go. REPLACE ALL INCUMBENTS! This is my battle cry!

The Repubs don't want to win in 2012. Look at the losers they are fielding as candidates. And why should they even care. Obama is the best Repub of the bunch. He's everything Bush was but on steroids. But Repubs are too stupid and caught up in the propaganda of left and right to realize it.

@anticap: I believe many others would readily admit liberalism has hijacked this economy. @ml52: Push polling and glowing media coverage (as opposed to false vilification towards the Tea Party) will most certainly yield those kinds of numbers. I'm quite confident you'll find yourself on the "wrong side of history......again", come November 2012.

@taylorwood For the final time, I'm not a repub or a dem. I did not vote for Obama in the last election. I've repeatedly stated that both parties are bought and paid for shills for corporate America. I'm so glad that one repub on this forum can admit that the economy has been hijacked.

@redsonrising, fair point with Alec Baldwin. My wife and I are still here so I guess Michael Moore missed us.... but frankly, we are keeping our eye out for Chris Christie. Ed Shultz refused to accept BofA advertising on his radio show, turned them down flat.

@myopinion, They are not protesting "corporations" per say, and I don't speak for them, but I think they are protesting the fact that large financial institutions (Goldman-Sachs, BofA, hedge fund managers et al.) have a way outsized voice on tax and trade policy, and a revolving door with congress.....which has left the middle class on life support. You would have to agree if your nurons wern't so tainted by fox propaganda.

@myopinion Once again, if you'd actually gone there and talked to someone that has factual information, you'd learn that many local businesses downtown are very supportive of the movement, donating food, water, tents, clothes, etc. So what if they are eating at mcdonalds and starbucks. What does that really prove? Should they hunt antelope downtown at night. Or maybe prowl the alleys to find passed out homeless people to eat. You fools have all exhausted these stupid, ongoing remarks for weeks now, while you have really nothing of substance to say about the state of the country. But that is so typically Repub!! You can't even admit that Wall Street has looted the economy, even though you know its true beyond a doubt and you can't prove otherwise. THAT is lame.

They ARE protesting the government as well as Wall Street, to the point that this movement will not be co-opted by the democrats like the Repubs co-opted the Tea Party. Obama will not be able to use this movement to his advantage. Reality must really bite for you, sucker.

The protests have gotten attention but are ineffective. The big corporations have heavy influence on gov't which controls the police. This is only costing the taxpayers in overtime, clean up, etc.

I FIRMLY support the right of the protestors to demonstrate, BUT !! They must do it within the guide lines of the Law !!. Having said that, a better way to do this, is to MAKE THE BANKS OBSOLETE !!! You can do so by joining your local Credit Union. With Credit Unions, the members ARE the owners. They do not have FATCAT ceo`s from new york city getting rich off of average working people !!!!

If anybody thinks voting matters truly make a difference, I got a bridge to sell you. Just remember back the the King dome a great Seattle icon and the people of WA voted to keep it. Well the big Corp found a lope hole and now we got Safeco field and we still had to pay for it. I can't help being cynical and think that if voting truly made a difference the Oligarchs would make it illegal, hence "without recourse, civil disobediencee becomes 'the course.'

If you have money you have the "right" to destroy others lives but don't demonstate against anyone if you don't. They"ll take that right away from you just by virtue of their money.
