SEATTLE – Police moved into Westlake Park Monday morning and began removing the tents of the Occupy Seattle protesters who defied orders not to camp in the park. Eight people were arrested.
Around 6:30 a.m., officers could be seen moving through the park. Police moved some tents, but some protesters took the initiative to move on their own. About 140 tents were removed from the park.
"I don't support the SPD but I understand that they're doing what they are told to do and so I try to be as respectful as I can, but some people are a little more upset," said one protester.
Westbound Pine Street between Fifth and Fourth avenues was closed around 7 a.m. Metro Transit reported that routes 7, 10, 11, 12, 14, 43 and 49 were being re-routed for about two hours. Riders were advised to use the stop at Pine Street east of Seventh Avenue.
Mayor Mike McGinn has invited the demonstrators to move to City Hall Plaza and out of the retail core, but only a handful have responded.
"Mayor Mike McGinn is not going to put his sticker on our protest," said a protester. "We're not going to let that happen."
Some demonstrators say they'll remain in Westlake Park to carry on their protest against what they say is undue power of corporations over the U.S. government and economy. Police say that's fine, but that camping is not allowed and the park closes at 10 p.m. every night.
Two weeks ago, 25 people were arrested when police forced protesters to remove their tents.
