SEATTLE – Planning and development officials have conditionally granted a permit to build a 175-foot Ferris wheel at Seattle’s Pier 57.
The proposed wheel will be positioned perpendicular to Alaskan Way. It will have 41 gondolas that will be fully enclosed and air conditioned so that no people or objects will be at risk of falling out.
The decision by the Department of Planning and Development indicates the wheel will be behind a building on the pier and will have no impact on views of the waterfront.
There was no indication by the city when the wheel would open.
Planners said reaction from the public has been mostly supportive.
