The Seattle International Film Festival kicked off Thursday night, and the opening night film had a big hometown tie.

"Jimi: All Is By My Side" tells the story of Seattle native and rock legend Jimi Hendrix. It was directed by the man who wrote the screenplay for this year's Academy Award winner for best picture, "12 Years A Slave."

Director John Ridley and Actress Hayley Atwell, who plays Hendrix' love interest in the film, were among those who walked the red carpet and attended Thursday night's debut.

Moments before the film began, SIFF organizers made two big announcements in front of a packed house at McCaw Hall.  They are buying The Uptown Theatre in lower Queen Anne and leasing the Egyptian Theatre in Capitol Hill, which was facing a pending closure.

The move secures the future of both historic theatres and gives SIFF two venues to show independent films, all year long.

The 40th annual Seattle International Film Festival runs through June 8th.  It will feature hundreds of films from 70 different countries, at venues throughout Seattle.
