SEATTLE -- The City of Seattle has been working behind the scenes for the past eight months to bring back the NBA.

Mayor Mike McGinn confirmed Monday that negotiations are underway with San Francisco hedge-fund manager Chris Hansen to build a new arena in SODO.

KING 5's Chris Daniels broke the news in December that Hansen bought a 3-acre parcel near Safeco Field for $21.6 million -- nearly $3 million more than its assessed value.

Hansen, who grew up in Seattle and graduated from Roosevelt High School, proposed building an arena that could host both an NBA and an NHL team.

"If somebody comes forward and is going to spend or invest hundreds of millions of dollars in our city, we have to take that seriously," McGinn said Monday.

McGinn said no public money would be used to build a new stadium -- no dollars from the general fund and no new taxes.

"I believe we have to be very careful and prudent with out city dollars," he said.

The mayor has hired a consultant and put together a team to work on the arena project, but the next move is in Hansen's court.

Once Hansen puts forward a firm proposal, McGinn said he will take it to the City Council for discussion.

One NBA team that could make the move to Seattle is the Sacramento Kings. That team faces a March 1 deadline to negotiate a new arena deal there.

NBA Commissioner David Stern on Tuesday told the Salt Lake Tribune he had general knowlege of the talks and that he thought Seattle was a great destination, provided a new arena is built. He also said there were indications that negotiations between the Kings and Sacramento were positive. Stern said there are no plans to expand the league to 31 teams.

So it comes out no new tax, no money from the city and still people are b*tching? C'mon people. Remove the stick from your you-know-what and stop being a bunch of drama queens. This is a guy trying to bring something to us, a world class events venue and professional sports team. Don't like beer prices? Don't buy one! Nobody ever forced you to buy one, that's on you. Don't like NBA anymore? Don't go to games! There are thousands here who want to attend NBA and NHL games. This will bring JOBS to the area, drive more economic revenue, and something to fill the winter void at the least for sports fans. Start being positive people. Plus, in case you didn't see, the arena would be right next to a light rail station which would help in the case of traffic. AND, there is a Safeco Field parking garage next door. Egos getting the best of some of you. Do what's best for all.

Privately financed? Now that's something I think we should all be in favor of. If the area can handle parking for a 67k football/soccer stadium and a 45k baseball park, it can handle the parking needs for a 20k seat arena.

Ok to paraphrase the Mayor....we will not spend any public money but we are hiring a consultant??? Really are you stupid? He just said he is not spending any public money...so does that mean he is spending his own money to pay for this consultant? "McGinn said no public money would be used to build a new stadium -- no dollars from the general fund and no new taxes. "I believe we have to be very careful and prudent with out city dollars," he said. The mayor has hired a consultant and put together a team to work on the arena project, but the next move is in Hansen's court."

Please not Seattle - you already blew it and your politicians are the worst. Seattle voted against the baseball stadium also, they don't deserve an NBA or NHL team or any team for that matter. I say Bellevue is the best spot, maybe Renton or Woodinville but not Seattle.

Boy - the negative nancy's are out in force today. I could care less about the NBA making a reappearance in the city. But that tiny little tid-bit about the NHL possibly coming to town really makes me happy! No more trekking up to Canada to watch a pro game! Or, better yet, happily trekking up to Canada to watch MY city's team play! YES!!!

As long as this is just not another rich crybaby standing at the public trough, tin cup in hand, I don't care. But I doubt it. Whenever you mix secret talks with politicians and professional sports, what you get is a huge public subsidy. Hopefully this will just die and go away. Why make Sacramento's problems ours?

@ankh5 I'm done arguing, mainly because you had to pull the "jock" card...I'm sorry if you were bullied in high school or left out by the "jocks"...As I said before, I, unlike you apparently, support all venues the can improve the culture and social togetherness of the city EVEN if I don't plan to enjoy them myself. But that's ok, continue to be selfish and only vote for the things that directly benefit you. If you don't want to pay 6 dollars for a hot dog, then by all means go for a hike instead. Meanwhile, let the other 110 million of us (because that's how many people watched the Super Bowl, but of course it's not a revenue generator) enjoy what we enjoy...I'm sure there will be no complaint when the Democratic National Convention is held at this beautiful new venue...

@ankh5 As a sports fan in this city I am the one who is paying $6 for a hotdog and $10 for a beer. I am not a jock. I am a working professional that also happens to enjoy sports. But put that aside for a moment..... No one seems to remember that the Kingdome was a dump. The existing revenues were only paying the interest on the financing to build the place. Building the stadium for the Seahawks fixed that problem, and went to a vote. The result was a debt that will be retired and the county/city is out of the business of managing sports facilities. This was a good deal for the city of Seattle/King County. The teams in Seattle promote tourism and generate revenue streams. And this doesn't even touch on the charitable activities of the NFL, MLB, and the NBA. You can just hand wave away all the reasons why things like this can make sense for a city, but that doesn't make it so......

@cdseattle Respectfully, you are blowing a lot of smoke when you start talking about Super Bowls, World Series etc coming to a city. What are odds? The same as being struck by lightning? And I maintain those are just a brief shot in the arm for businesses and that does not even make up for the tax burden on people that couldn't care less about sports (the majority). Sports fans get irrational about their stadiums even as tax monies are being diverted from other more useful purposes. $6 dollar hotdogs and $10 beers hardly make me feel sorry for sports owners who love to hold communities for ransom to fund gargantuan stadiums. This is just more of the same garbage, different day. Funny that when one posts as I am here, the jocks come out in force with a lot of cheap emotion about people that run around doing things with a ball. Try to get them to muster the same energy about something that could really matter -- it's just laughable.

@ankh5 While I respect your opinion, I disagree with the fact that a stadium only contributes to the businesses in and around the arena. Hosting major events such as the super bowl, world series, ncaa tournament, nba finals, etc. can be a huge boom to an entire city. And furthermore, do we not care about those businesses who were affected when the Sonics left? I suggest asking the owners of the restaurants and bars near Key Arena how they feel about that. Seattle Center has become a wasteland since the team left. I happen to not enjoy the museums and art venues in Seattle, yet I have no problem spending a few extra tax dollars to help those that do. It's about living in a community of people with different interests yet supporting one another...

Right on! cdseattle well put ! stop it with your belly aching about traffic or taxes. Either way traffic is not going to change , wether you build a new stadium or not,and they are going to raise taxes anyway wether they build a new stadium or not!! So please stop it ..... All your doing is blowing smoke up your own rearend! I would love to have basketball back in seattle. What do you think sports fans?? Bring it, peace out....

Boston, Denver, and Minneapolis are cities similar in size to Seattle and they all easily support MLB, nfl, nba AND NHL. Boston and Denver have mls too. All of these markets have a NCAA team. There's no question Seattle could support the same level those other cities do.

@cdseattle The Sodo district is a largely industrial and manufacturing district. It's not supposed to be pretty like Queen Anne. Sports stadiums, studies have shown don't generate much for the economy outside the perimeter of the stadium itself. Claims to the contrary are overblown. Let professional sports completely finance itself for a change and people may be a bit more open. People other than those hoop fans who hear nothing but basketballs bouncing around inside their heads.

Typical comments so far from our fellow non-sports fans in Seattle. I suppose if it was a new opera house then everyone would be all for it. Meanwhile, the SODO area continues to be a dump and the absolute armpit of the city, yet everyone will oppose to cleaning it up a bit with a state of the art arena that will generate both jobs and revenue for the city, and will be used for MORE than just sports people. Don't worry, no trees will be torn down in the process so back off a bit and let your city improve itself...

C'mon we really don't need another sports franchise here in Seattle. The congestion and traffic alone already exists where we can't sustain. Bring another monster into the midst and where will everyone go. Sounds like Mayor and others are just looking for more taxes for the city.

No public money, no new taxes, and no money from the general fund. He sounds like a snake oil salesman. At the very very least they will increase some existing taxes. This town will not support two more pro sports , they might want them but in the long run they will not support them. Bike McGinn needs to stick to the real issues of the city. How much public money has already been spent researching this back room deal?
