Rory Burks is a proud 8-year-veteran of the Coast Guard who just started school in Seattle.

Last Sunday he was in Belltown, celebrating a friend’s wedding. He was near 4th and Blanchard when he stepped away and was robbed and beaten.

He has been in and out of consciousness since.

"When you come in and see that and see his face and his 13 bones broken in his face, and his nose, it's horrifying,” said Burks’ mother, Una Ripley.

There were 57 assaults in Belltown in August, though police statistics show violent crime overall is down compared to last year.

Ripley is pleading with people to be careful when they go out at night.

"Don't be out on the streets at night, not alone,” she said.

Ripley says Rory has at least a year of rehab ahead of him. He remembers who she is, but doesn’t know his sister.

Anyone with  information about the case is asked to contact SPD's Robbery Unit at (206) 684-5535.
