A man was killed Wednesday morning during an apartment fire in Seattle’s University District. Fire officials believe the fire may have been intentionally set.
Seattle Police say the man either jumped or fell out of a window on the 9th floor, where it’s believed the fire started.
Another man in that unit was transported to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition.
Police responded to a report of a disturbance at the apartment building in the 4500 Block of 7th Avenue NE around 1 a.m.
When officers arrived, they could smell smoke but could not force the door open because it appeared someone had barricaded it shut, said Seattle Police Detective Mark Jamieson.
When officers eventually opened the door, they could see a large fire in the unit and tried repeatedly to talk one man out but he would not follow their instructions.
Seattle firefighters arrived and put the fire out but the man had already jumped or fallen out of the window.
The second man was found barely breathing, and was transported to the hospital. Two others in the apartment building were taken to Harborview with minor injuries due to smoke inhalation.
The Red Cross says it’s assisting six other adults who were living in the apartment complex.
