SEATTLE -- Most bike riders know that freeways in metropolitan areas are off limits to cyclists. But today, we got a glimpse of a repeat offender, and police say he's managed to elude capture for years.

WSDOT first caught sight of him Tuesday around noon on their traffic cameras. A rogue cyclist traveling southbound on Interstate 5 in Seattle, riding on a dangerously narrow shoulder next to the carpool lane.

WSDOT alerted Washington State Patrol, while trying to track him with their cameras. Troopers say it may be the same ghost rider who has appeared in that area over the years. But when they try to arrest him, he disappears.

The cyclist can be seen making his way through downtown, squeezing by cars going a freeway speed. He suddenly stops near the Pike Street overpass, jumps the jersey barrier, and disappears. Seconds later, a trooper goes by but misses him.

Where the cyclist goes from there is a mystery. Below that area are the express lanes, where troopers have even found bikes stashed away between pillars in years gone by.

"Obviously it's someone who has a really good understanding of where the roads stop and end. Not a lot of people have been on foot in that area," says trooper Julie Startup.

Biking on the freeway where it's illegal is a jail-able offense, but troopers say the main concern is safety, not only for the cyclist, but for all the drivers near him.

I think this article speaks volume for both King5.com and the WSP, more so than the crazy rogue cyclist. First, agreeing with the comment from southlakeunion, the writer made it sound like he was whizzing by motor cars at freeway speed. Second, if the WSP have known about him for years, and can monitor his movements with their cameras, how does he manage to elude them for so long? Is it because they really weren't too keen on catching him to began with? Or are they at the same competency level as those who went after the "barefoot bandit" a couple years back? Lastly, I don't worry about the rogue cyclist using the freeway or his safety so much as I worry he might cause an accident from motorists trying to avoid him or from rubberneckers.

Hahaha..... it's his fault if anything happens. I wouldn't want to waste any taxpayer money on him trying to catch him. The I5 drivers will take care of him.

"The cyclist can be seen making his way through downtown, squeezing by cars going a freeway speed".... WHAT?? Are you suggesting that he was travelling at freeway speeds on a bicycle? First of all find an editor, secondly take a physics class.

Cyclists like this give all cyclists a bad rap with drivers and pedestrians. The man is reckless. It's sad the comments here bashing drivers and not addressing the issue: this guy is breaking a law and putting himself and other at risk.

I see 1000 idiot drivers to every 1 idiot biker, all you guys that I keep seeing backwards and/or upside down in the ditch along I-90, you got there because you were speeding on the obviously sketchy road conditions and you deserve to be there. It's too bad for the innocent people you take with you and the people's time you waste with the back-up traffic you cause.

If they know when he rides then they should have bicycle cops ready to go after him. He might evade cops in cars but not bicycle cops..

The number of automobile drivers who obey the rules of the road is zero!! But the number of hypocrites who come on here in a complete delusional state who think it's only others, mainly cyclists, who should follow traffic laws is almost endless. Over 400,000 people have been killed in the US over the last decade due to people's reckless driving habits. Clearly, this cyclists route is very dangerous but he has not killed or injured anyone. You want safer roads? Look in the mirror.

I used to be all for sharing the road with cyclists who obey traffic laws and use common sense. However, I have reached my breaking point with most cyclists who fail to fall into that category. I have dealt with the worst sort of cycling riff-raff. From almost making me crash to almost killing them. Because of them, I now abhor all cyclists. For all of you who do obey the rules of the road, I'm sorry to say that if I honk or give you a hand gesture, it's because of yahoos like this.

Another camera in the area where it will get his full face, and then publish it in the news print. What is wrong with that? Yea, the cost, but he will get jail time and make him pay for the court cost and the time and effort to install the cameras. End of "Ghost Rider".

How can the rider be a repeat offender if the bicyclist has never been caught and or charged? How do they know its a he if its a "ghost rider"? How is it that he has eluded capture for years but was first sighted on Tuesday? No wonder it took them so long to get the Green River Killer.

Why doesn't it surprise me that the WSP can't catch a guy riding a bike on the freeway in downtown Seattle for the past two years.

Yeah, most bicycle helmets are only rated for a 35 mph crash. He is cruising to be a bug on someone's grill.

Is there a reason why you stick a sentence like, "The cyclist was wearing a helmet" right there in the middle of everything? How does that relate to anything else that has been said either before or after? Is it to help us identify him? "Oh, that guy biking down I-5 isn't wearing a helmet. That's not him." Or is it to make him appear smarter? "He's pedaling down I-5 like an idiot, endangering his own life as well as many others, but he's wearing a helmet, so that's good!" Dude is openly violating the law and apparently has a death wish.
