Fourteen boats were damaged or destroyed at a Lake Union storage facility Thursday night. Illegal fireworks are believed to be the cause.
The fire started just before 10 p.m. at the Lake Union Skylaunch Marina.
The marina believes one of several fireworks launched from a hillside landed on a boat, starting a fire that quickly spread.
Firefighters and witness say the fire was not an easy one to fight.
“There was a lot of black smoke, then a lot of fire that never went out. Whenever they put it out, it came back with a vengeance,” said one witness.
One firefighter had to be treated for minor injuries.
The marina says staff took measures to protect as many boats as they could. There are about 250 boat customers that rely on the facility for storage.
Damage is estimated at $1.5 million.
The fire department is investigating.
