A semi-truck lost control as it merged onto southbound I-5 from Spokane Street, cut across five lanes of traffic and slammed into two cars and a shuttle bus transporting people to the airport Thursday. At least five people sustained injures.

According to Washington State Patrol, the semi-truck had taken the offramp too fast. The slick freeway from rain caused the driver to veer across all lanes of traffic and slam into the jersey barrier. Weather was factor, said State Patrol.

There were conflicting reports of how many people were injured and the status of their conditions. State Patrol said five people suffered light injuries. Seattle Fire Department's PIO said six people were injured - 1 critically, four seriously and 1 semi-seriously - and taken to Harborview Medical Center.

The collision caused an 11-mile backup on southbound I-5 through downtown Seattle for several hours. By 2 p.m., road crews had towed the airport shuttle bus, cars and semi-truck off the interstate, and by the end of the evening commute, the backup had cleared.

Washington Department of Transportation advises drivers to take alternate routes and reminds people to take it slow during heavy rain.
