The King County Sheriff's Department is searching for a suspect who fired shots near deputies who had a car pulled over for a traffic stop.

It happened at about 8:30 p.m. in Skyway, on 72nd Avenue South off Renton Avenue.

Sheriff John Urquhart tells KING 5 his deputies pulled over the vehicle for expired tabs.  A deputy was standing at the driver's side window when, moments later, someone ran by and opened fire on the vehicle.

Several bullets hit the car.  The two people inside were not injured, and neither were the deputies.

Still, Urquhart quickly rushed to the scene, to make sure his deputies were okay.  He says they did not return fire when the gunman started shooting.

Investigators believe the gunman was not shooting at deputies.  Instead, they think the vehicle and the people inside were the intended target.

"I heard like three shots or something like that, and then right after that 10 or 12 more right behind each other.  It was very scary, because I rolled off the couch because that sounded like it was right outside my window," said witness Willie Ford.

Deputies enlisted the help of Seattle Police K9 units, but at 11:30 p.m. they still had not found the shooter.

Investigators are now talking to the two people inside the car that was targeted, to try to determine whether they know anything about the shooter.

Anyone with information about what happened is urged to call the King County Sheriff's Department.
