The 19-year-old ex-boyfriend of a Renton teen found dead in her burning home last month pleaded not guilty to charges Wednesday.

Jarod Lane, 19, is accused of first degree murder and arson in the death of Jessica Scholl, 17.

Police said firefighters found Scholl stabbed, beaten and strangled to death as her house burned around her on May 25.

Scholl's family read a statement following Lane's arraignment, vowing to be in court throughout the case.

"This plea has left our family deeply hurt and saddened, said Stan Sumida, Scholl's grandfather. "His not guilty plea starts a prolonged trial that will continue to remind us of Jessica's brutal and violent death."

Bail for Lane remains at $2 million.

Scholl had recently broken up with Lane after a two-year relationship, according to police.

Court documents stated Lane admitted to his mother and a friend that he killed Scholl. The day of the murder, detectives said Lane called his mother and told her “I love you. I’ve done something I’m not proud of, I have to run away.” In another call, he allegedly told his mother he was at Scholl's home the day of her murder and "snapped" when she said she was seeing someone else.

In a separate call to a friend in Arizona, detectives reported Lane said “I killed her,” and that he was going to Mexico.

He was later arrested in Oklahoma and waived extradition proceedings.
