RENTON, Wash. -- Police and animal control were able to safely tranquilize a black bear that was roaming around Renton on Monday.

The bear was initially spotted in a parking lot of the Highlands Community Church around 11:30 a.m., where a pastor of the church managed to snap a photo (click through Gallery to view all photos, courtesy Derek Nelson of Highlands Community Church).

A short time later the bear was found up a tree near the Renton Highlands Safeway.

The bear climbed to the top of the tall tree near the grocery store, while animal control officers waited below with a large canvass net. Officers shot the bear with a tranquilizer and it fell out of the tree into the net, unharmed.

Dozens of people gathered to watch the ordeal unfold.

The bear will be temporarily taken into custody by the State Department of Fish and Wildlife and released into the wild, away from the Renton neighborhood.
