Two workers cleaning the Capitol Dome in Olympia Thursday dangled like fish on hooks when the platform they were standing on slid out from under them.
Safety ropes harnessing the workers saved them from falling, and one worker managed to scramble to a ledge. He pulled the other man to safety.
The pair were only hanging for a few minutes before both were brought down.
The platform they were standing on is similar to one used by painters. It was tethered up outside the fourth floor on the eastside of the building. For some unknown reason, it went vertical while the men were standing on it, said Steve Valandra of the Department of Enterprise Services.
This is the first time the Capitol Building has been cleaned since 2004. Regular cleanings stopped due to the state's shrinking budget. The project is expected to be completed by October.
