OLYMPIA, Wash. --  Police are awaiting autopsy results to determine whether a man shot himself or was shot by police on Friday evening.

According to Lt. Jim Costa, officers received a call of a fender bender in the parking lot of the Creekwood Court Apartments at about 5:45pm Friday.

When they arrived the man believed to have caused the accident jumped out of his car and started running.

An officer followed him into the nearby play area of a daycare center at 12th Avenue SE and Blvd Road SE. Almost simultaneously two guns were drawn, from the man and the officer.

The man was shot in the head.

The man - described by neighbors - is in his 50s and owns two apartment complexes. Neighbors say a few days ago they got a letter notifying them that the apartments are in foreclosure.

The officer is a 25-year Olympia Police veteran. He was placed on administrative leave.
