OLYMPIA, Wash. - Mary Yu is Washington state's first Latina, Asian and openly gay supreme court justice.
"I still can't believe this is real," said Yu, shortly after being sworn in Tuesday.
Justice Yu said she never dreamed she would be a judge.
As a child in Chicago, she just wanted to have a job when she grew up.
"What's motivated me is, where can I be an impact player?" said Yu, "Where can I make a difference? Where can I do some good?"
The former King County Superior Court judge and prosecutor said she brings a history of unbiased work to the state's highest court.
She knows she may only be remembered for her sexual orientation or ethnicity.
"It makes me proud," said Yu, "I have a responsibility to all of those communities, to be honest and fair and do this job well. So it's OK."
