A man holding a large knife who was shot by a Lewis County Sheriff's deputy Thursday has been identified.

Medical examiners identified him as Gregory Kaufman, 64, of Napavine.

The deputy was identified as Dep. Matt Wallace, 37.

Investigators said Dep. Wallace stopped at a turnout on SR 6 in Boistfort to ask the driver of a parked car if he needed help.

Kaufman got out of the vehicle, bleeding and apparently cut. He lunged at Wallace with a large knife when the deputy fired on him, investigators said.

Kaufman died at the scene.

Wallace has worked at the Lewis County Sheriff's Office for nine years.
