Flowers, balloons and cards of sympathy mark the spot on Summit Lake Road where 17-year-old Amanda Winters died while driving to school Monday.
The Washington State Patrol said the accident happened around 6:30 a.m.
Winters’ father was the first to discover the crash, authorities said.
Investigators are still determining a cause for the crash. Neighbors in the Summit Lake area said accidents and speeding on the road are frequent.
Winters was a senior at Capital High School, which provided counseling to students affected by the tragedy.
“I feel like I lost part of my life,” said friend Vanna Altheide, “It’s really not fair.”
Altheide was among a large group of people who paid respects to Winters at the crash site Monday evening. Friends said Winters “pre-celebrated” her birthday the night before the crash with her family.
“I just don’t understand why she had to be taken,” Altheide continued, “She was such a good person and the had so much to offer the world.”
