Marcus Shelton has a big family, through blood and service.  The 54-year-old Kent resident is an Army veteran.  Five of his uncles and his father all served in the military as well.

Shelton considers the Armed Forces his “first family.”

“It’s a bond in the military that, when you meet a lot of good people, you know them for life,” Shelton explained Sunday.

Shelton’s father Thomas spent 26 years in the Air Force.  It was that dedication that spurned Marcus’s desire to honor all area veterans.

“I’m not even close to what my Dad accomplished,” Shelton said. “It would take me a whole lifetime.”

In an effort to recognize veterans, Shelton made a phone call last year to the home of Kent Mayor Suzette Cooke.  His hope was to rename S. 231st Way, “Veterans Drive.”

“His passion for this was so clear,” Mayor Cooke said. “We even had a liaison, so-to-speak, because of his persistence.”

After working through the public process, including notifying the post office and nearby homeowners, Kent’s city council approved the name change Tuesday.  An official proclamation will be made Friday.

“When I see the sign Veterans Drive,” Cooke said, “It will always remind me that one person can make a difference. Marcus Shelton made that difference.”
