FEDERAL WAY, Wash. -- When you go to the dentist, an exam can cost hundreds of dollars. That's a hard-to-swallow price tag if you don't have insurance.

"Instead of every six months, maybe they're choosing to come in every nine months or a year," said Dr. Van Vuong, a Federal Way dentist. "And then of course, what we're seeing is that they're dealing the treatment that is needed."

Dr. Vuong said he sees it happen more and more often, and the patient's oral health rapidly declines.

"So six months down the road, instead of spending a couple hundred dollars on a filling, it's a couple thousand dollars because now the tooth needs a root canal and a crown," he said

So for the month of September, Vuong's practice is giving $39 checkups to those who no longer have dental coverage because of job loss.

But it doesn't stop there.

During the Tacoma teacher strike, Vuong was saddened to hear how some kids who rely on the free-lunch program were going without food. It was so troubling, he decided to donate all the proceeds of the exams to help stock the food bank at Federal Way's Multi-Service Center.

"He's doing such a great thing," said Dini Duclos, the center's executive director. "Helping people get dental care and donating the money to us."

His patients are also impressed. Xiomara Leon says she has insurance now, but can relate to those without it.

"Sometimes we had to wait to get some more money," said Leon. "Or say 'No, I can't.'"

Vuong said 25 patients have taken him up on the discounted exams. The promotion goes to the end of September, but he plans to offer it again in the future.

To crown that tooth ONE TOOTH- 1200 dollars. No wonder why many folks go to Oregon or North into Canada for Doctor and dentist apointments. Thank;s Olympia.. Thanks for nothing jerks

a stupid mistake that lots of dentist make is that they do not accept or participate in the DSHS coverage for dental work. DSHS payment is just as good as cash is. The point is, many patients are told what they need is not covered-where it is. Basic coverage. Having said that, There is no way one tooth removal should cost 400 dollars- when other dentist who accept dshs are happy to help you. This dentist for example is leading the way to give back to our state. With my arms open here- I salute him for that and can not thank him for it. No I am not his patient, but it is good always to hear news of doctors making a differance, to help others in need. Other dentist should be reminded that it " could be them" out of work, disabled, homeless. As most of us live paycheck to paycheck.

What this proves is that dentists could charge less and more people, insured or uninsured, would be able to afford care. Lowering the prices for all healthcare could be a win/win for everyone. I avoid services not covered by my ever increasingly expensive insurance and I'm tired of the services I do receive being limited by the insurers. We used to visit a doctor who charged only $25 for exams and visits. His waiting room was always full and he certainly didn't look like he was suffering from not making enough money to pay his employees or maintain his standards of care.

How about he offer 100 dollar root canals. I would be there in a heartbeat. Then it would only cost me 3000 dollars for all me teeth.
