Federal Way -- A broken water main left about 20 homes without running water Tuesday morning.
The water main break happened around 3:00 a.m. in the 30400 block of 4th Avenue South. When utility crews responded to the call, they found water gushing from the water main at a rate of about 1,000 gallons a minute.
"I heard a lot of noise. I looked out and saw a lot of water gushing out of the street," said Joy Shopbel, resident. "The water district all started showing up. I kind of figured we wouldn't have any water when I got up."
Utility crews managed to turn off the water about a half an hour later, but the're concerned the excess water may create sink holes in the road. They're digging up the road and repairing the water main as well as checking out any possible damage to the road.
Water is expected to be fully restored by 10 a.m.
Meanwhile, the intersection of 4th Avenue South and South 305th St. has been closed. Drivers are advised to take alternate routes.
