Everett police detectives have arrested a 23-year-old man for investigation of the death of his 2-month-old son, according to the Everett Herald.
Brian Perez Reyes is being held at the Snohomish County Jail for investigation of manslaughter and first-degree domestic violence child assault. The Herald said bail is set at $2 million.
A doctor at Seattle Children's Hospital said a severe brain injury likely caused the baby to stop breathing. The baby, named Daniel Levi Perez Reyes according to the Herald, was taken to Swedish-Mill Creek medical center before being transferred to Seattle Children's.
The baby was staying with his father, because his mother had to be at work early in the morning.
Perez Reyes said he was sleeping with the baby next to him on the bed. He told detectives that he went to get a bottle, returned to find the baby not breathing, and tried to jostle the baby to get a response, the Herald reported.
The father also allegedly claimed to have tripped on cord and dropped Daniel two to three feet.
However, Snohomish County Prosecutor Mark Roe told the Herald that an autopsy showed injuries to the neck consistent with shaking. And a doctor told detectives the injury likely was the result of "rapid acceleration, then rapid deceleration in succession."
