EVERETT, Wash. -- Families in Everett's Valley View neighborhood are now suing the city, with claims it is to blame for causing their homes to crumble.

Homeowners began noticing cracks in 2011 during the winter rainy season. Now, three homes have been red tagged with one all but destroyed. Red tagged means no one is allowed inside.

A total of five families have filed suit in Snohomish Superior Court with claims the city is negligent by funneling excess drain water into the ravine below the neighborhood. They cite a 2004 drainage improvement as the root cause. The families are seeking compensation for the damage to their homes.

The city has not yet responded to the lawsuit. But earlier claims by city engineers point to a natural earth movement as the cause for the sinking.
