Traffic was backed up for miles in Everett on Monday afternoon because of a brush fire along I-5
The fire spread quickly and burned more than a quarter mile of land. Smoke clogged the air here making visibility tough.
Fire crews closed two northbound lanes.
The flames were so high and smoke so thick is the neighborhood that people started making plans to evacuate.
The big concern was that conditions have been so dry that the flames could jump from the freeway to the backyards and dozens of homes could be in the fire's path.
Folks were so close that firefighters actually ran hoses from the hydrants in front of their homes to try to douse the flames, as they crept ever closer and homeowners started grabbing what they could and headed out:
The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
