Port Angeles has top birth rate in Washington

Research by On Numbers ranks Port Angeles first among cities in Washington for average birthrate.

The Puget Sound Business Journal reported that Port Angeles averages 86 births per 1,000 women, a rate that puts it 22nd in the nation.

Longview is second in the state and 25th in the nation, with a rate of 84 births per 1,000 women.

At 87 births per 1,000 women, Provo, Utah has the highest birth rate in the U.S. In 2011, Provo recorded 12,523 births.

Compared to the top cities, the national average is 54 births per 1,000 women.

The highest rates are in the South and West, while the lowest averages are found in cities in the Midwest and Eastern U.S.

The five major markets with the highest birthrates:

  • Provo, Utah, 87 births per 1,000 women
  • McAllen-Edinburg, Texas, 86
  • Durham, N.C., 80
  • Memphis, 77
  • Boise, Idaho, 76

The five lowest rates for major markets:

  • Albany, N.Y., 36 births per 1,000 women
  • Springfield, Mass., 38
  • Knoxville, Tenn., 39
  • Bridgeport-Stamford, Conn., 41
  • Dayton, Ohio, 43

On Numbers, the research division of American City Business Journals, analyzed U.S. Census Bureau data for this report.

A "birth," for the purposes of this research, refers to any instance a woman delivers at least one newborn. Additionally, the major markets are the nation's 100 largest metropolitan areas.
