BELLINGHAM, Wash. – A stretch of northbound I-5 in Bellingham was shut down for four hours Thursday after two separate collisions, including one involving a tanker that was carrying liquid nitrogen.

The accidents happened at about 8 a.m.

State troopers and the Dept. of Transportation say one collision was a tanker that hit another vehicle and flipped over in the northbound lanes at Lakeway Drive. That tanker was carrying liquid nitrogen that created a vapor cloud which covered the freeway for about 20 minutes.

The driver of the tanker was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The southbound lanes at the scene were back open after about an hour, but the northbound mostly remained closed until noon.

The second accident involved a semi truck in the southbound lanes at Sunset Drive. There were no immedate reports of injuries in that crash. Southbound I-5 was shut down for about an hour at that scene.
