A longtime swim coach at the North Whidbey Aquatic Club was fired last week after possible financial irregularities were uncovered.

Neil Romney worked at the club for 10 years running a swim program that is supported by the publicly funded North Whidbey Park and Recreation District.  According to the district's new executive director, Bill Walker, and district board chairman Scott Vogt, Romney was reluctant to provide financial records, leading to his termination.

Vogt said once the books were opened, “thousands of dollars” worth of unpaid fees and unexplained write-offs were discovered. As a public entity, financial information is supposed to be provided to board members, Vogt said.

Attempts to reach Romney were unsuccessful. Vogt and Walker said the former coach was not fired for taking or misappropriating money, but for not providing the records.
