BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- Police say they have a suspect in the shooting death of a woman in her Bellingham apartment. The suspect, however, is hospitalized after police say she tried to take her own life.
Detectives were on their way to the suspect's home at Clinton Thursday when one received a voice mail from the woman about the killing and saying by the time they found her she would be dead.
Detectives eventually found her on a beach near Langley bleeding from self-inflicted cuts to her wrists. She was flown to a Seattle hospital for surgery and is expected to survive.
Bellingham police believe the 40-year-old woman shot Kriston A. Dunya, whose body was found Tuesday.
They say the suspect had a relationship with Dunya's estranged husband and the shooting was possibly motivated by her desire to keep him from losing custody of his 7-year-old son.
Dunya's father said he was surprised to hear about the arrest and simply said he hoped they got the right person.
