Interstate 5 in Whatcom County was completely shut down for two hours after reports that someone with a rifle was firing shots from an overpass Saturday night.

It started around 10:15 p.m. at the overpass at Smith Road.

Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Kevin Mede said a Ferndale Police officer responded and saw shots being fired over the northbound lanes.

Officers from Whatcom County, Ferndale and Bellingham police departments, Washington State Patrol and the Border Patrol all responded, some wearing bulletproof vests and armed with assault rifles.

Despite an air and ground search that included K-9s and a helicopter, the shooter was able to get away. He was only described as a male with dark clothing on.

No people or cars were reported hit by gunfire.

I-5 was reopened around 12:15 a.m.

Anyone who saw something suspicious in the area Saturday night is asked to call police.
