A 31-year-old Blaine man has been arrested after admitting that he threw his 4-month-old child on the ground, causing critical injuries, police say.
Blaine Police say at about 6 p.m. on Wednesday, officers were notified by Washington State Department of Social and Health Services that a 4-month-old Blaine boy had been taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Bellingham by his mother because he was unresponsive.
Police say examinations by medical staff at the hospital revealed the child had suffered previous injuries, including fractured bones and head trauma, and had current injuries of the head and brain.
The baby was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
DSHS personnel, Seattle Police, Bellingham Police and the Whatcom County Prosecutor's Office are assisting the investigation, which has included several interviews with cooperative family members and others.
Police say on Friday afternoon, the father of the child admitted to police he had thrown the infant to the ground on the afternoon of October 31.
The father has been arrested by Blaine Police and booked into Whatcom County Jail on one charge of Assault of a Child in the 1st Degree.
His baby remains in critical condition in the intensive care unit of Harborview Medical Center.
