A Bellingham man kayaking in the Gulf of Mexico made an amazing rescue.
Rory O'Connor was fishing near Siesta Key, Florida when a dog swam up to his kayak.
It turns out the dog ran into the water after his owner was hit and killed by a drunk driver about a mile away.
The Florida Highway Patrol says 53-year-old Donna Chen was jogging with the dog named Barney on a sidewalk when they were hit.
Barney fled, ran about a mile to the beach and started swimming. O'Connor found the dog in distress about a half mile offshore.
"I immediately saw that he was in distress. He was shaking a lot,” said O’Connor.
O'Connor says the dog had several wounds and was bleeding. He took the dog to a nearby vet, who scanned the dog's microchip.
The dog has been reunited with his late owner's family.
