BELLINGHAM, Wash.  -- Officials say a man shot an arrow wrapped with a baggie of marijuana onto the roof of the Whatcom County Jail.

The Bellingham Herald reports that he later told deputies he had been aiming at a squirrel.

A sheriff's office employee reported seeing the man step out of his pickup truck with a bow and arrow Tuesday morning. Sheriff Bill Elfo says the man, identified as 36-year-old David Wayne Jordan, fired the arrow toward the jail's second-floor recreation area.

It missed its target and landed on the roof, and the sheriff's office witness got the license plate number as the truck drove away.

Jordan, who served 20 days earlier in the month for assault and resisting arrest, was arrested Tuesday evening for investigation of introducing contraband into the jail, resisting arrest and obstructing law enforcement.

The sheriff says Jordan couldn't explain why he needed to attach marijuana to the arrow to go squirrel hunting.
