HILLSBORO, Ore. -- A Bellevue pilot was not hurt when the aircraft he was flying developed landing gear problems and slid off the runway at the Hillsboro airport Monday afternoon.

The pilot was landing the single-engine Cirrus aircraft when it hit the ground hard and bounced back into the air. The pilot said he thought he'd be able to go back around and try the landing again, but when he hit the throttle the plane veered left and skidded off the runway into the grass, according to Storm Smith, a spokesman with the Hillsboro Fire Department.

The pilot and his wife were the only people on board. They were not injured.

The plane's landing gear sustained extensive damage, Smith said.

The Hillsboro Airport has just two runways.  It is located near NE 25th Avenue and NE Cornell Road.
